ACIP and SHRM Welcome Bipartisan
Comprehensive Immigration Reform Efforts

Strategic Affiliates Look Forward to Working with All Stakeholders on Meaningful, Sensible Reforms

Washington, D.C. – The American Council on International Personnel (ACIP) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) today welcomed the release of two sets of comprehensive immigration reform principles, one from the White House and one from a group of Democratic and Republican Senators, and urged all stakeholders to work together to enact meaningful, sensible and bipartisan reforms this year.

“U.S. employers are doing business in a new world, and the outdated U.S. employment-based immigration system must be reformed to keep up and allow them to drive U.S. economic prosperity,” said ACIP Executive Director Lynn Shotwell. “America needs a fully workable immigration system to compete in the 21st century economy.”

ACIP and SHRM, strategic affiliates, were encouraged to see that the principles included many of the key reforms to the U.S. employment-based immigration system for which the groups have long advocated, including enabling U.S. STEM advanced degree holders to stay in America and contribute to our economy, increasing access to and retention of top world talent and modernizing the worksite verification system to ensure a legal, authorized workforce. ACIP released its own employer principles for immigration reform last week.

“America’s employers need a fail-safe system for verifying the workers they hire are indeed work authorized,” said Michael Aitken, SHRM vice president of government affairs. “We are pleased policymakers intend to create a more secure system that prevents against identity fraud.”

“From work authorization to visa processing, U.S. employers need reliability, and they need an immigration system that works,” continued Shotwell. “We are happy to see the bipartisan principles released this week, and we look forward to working with all stakeholders on enacting meaningful reforms this year.”
