  1. Third Way memo, “The Gang of 8: Making America a Magnet for Global Talent”

    Third Way, a think tank representing centrist ideas, recently released a memo titled “The Gang of 8: Making America a Magnet for Global Talent.”  This memo compares how the comprehensive immigration reform bill prepared by the Senate Gang of 8, S. 744, would help improve the outdated practices and laws found under the current immigration system.  The memo lists a number of problem areas found in the current system and how they would be fixed under the new bill.

  2. New study from Brookings, “H-1B Visas and the STEM Shortage”

    On May 10, 2013, Jonathan Rothwell and Neil Ruiz from Brookings released their latest study titled “H-1B Visas and the STEM Shortage.”  This study looks into the debate surrounding the need for more H-1B visas in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.  It ultimately finds “that the H-1B program helps to fill a shortage of workers in STEM occupations.”

    • The New Paper I-9 Cannot Stop Identity Fraud:
      Yesterday, a new version of Form I-9 – the required form that all employers must fill out to verify the work authorization of each new hire – became mandatory. Employers will spend many hours understanding and integrating the new form into their onboarding procedures. While the new Form I-9collects some additional information, it does not solve the fundamental problem of identity authentication.

  5. New Report by Stuart Anderson at the National Foundation for American Policy, “H-1B Visas Essential to Attracting and Retaining Talent in America”

    On May 1, 2013, Stuart Anderson at the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) released his most recent report titled “H-1B Visas Essential to Attracting and Retaining Talent in America.”  In this report, Anderson finds that the immigration bill proposed by the Senate “Gang of 8,” S. 744, will severely limit an important and widely used employment-based visa category.  Specifically, the report found:

  7. Fact of the Week: ACIP and SHRM Praise Senate Progress on Immigration Reform

    The American Council on International Personnel (ACIP) and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) today commended introduction of the “Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013,” legislation to fix the broken U.S. immigration system, and singled out for praise the tireless efforts of the bipartisan Senate ‘Gang of Eight’ and their staff to advance these critical reforms.
