ACIP Applauds Representatives Quigley and Flake for Measure to Help Boost U.S. Economic Growth and Job Creation

Amendment to America COMPETES Reauthorization Act Would Help Retain
U.S.-Educated Foreign-Born Talent for America’s Innovation Economy

Washington, D.C. – The American Council on Internationa
l Personnel (ACIP) today commended Representatives Mike Quigley (D-IL) and Jeff Flake (R-AZ) for their amendment to the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act that would allow foreign-born, U.S.-educated students holding graduate-level degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to remain in America after graduation.

Representatives Quigley and Flake have shown that they recognize that America benefits when we retain the foreign national talent that we educate in our U.S. universities, and we applaud them for introducing this critical amendment. The amendment will help ensure U.S. employers continue to innovate and lay the groundwork for future American economic growth and job creation.  America cannot afford to lose this talent to overseas competitors vying with our nation for innovation leadership.

ACIP also remains committed to ensuring that America has a pipeline of U.S. students graduating with STEM degrees and entering those career fields and will continue to advocate for policies that improve domestic education.

Again, we thank Representatives Quigley and Flake for their leadership on U.S. innovation, economic growth and job creation and urge the adoption of this amendment.
