ACIP Applauds Introduction of “SKIL” Act of 2010

Provisions Would Enhance and Streamline Employment-based Immigration System; Urges Inclusion in Bipartisan Comprehensive Immigration Reform Measure

Washington, D.C. – The American Council on International Personnel (ACIP) today released the following statement praising the introduction of the "Securing Knowledge, Innovation, and Leadership" (SKIL) Act of 2010 by Representative John Shadegg (R-AZ).

ACIP applauds the SKIL Act for its effort to help the United States access the world’s best talent and keep America one-step ahead of our foreign competitors.  By enhancing and streamlining the employment-based immigration system for highly educated, foreign-born professionals, the SKIL Act will enable U.S. employers to continue to build an innovative and globally competitive workforce.

Both the employment-based (EB) green card and H-1B visa provisions of the SKIL bill will keep U.S. employers competitive by providing more predictability to recruit and retain top foreign professionals, which will, in turn, help strengthen the American economy and create more jobs for U.S workers.

Additionally, the bill’s provision to provide green cards to foreign-born students receiving advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics will help end America’s brain drain by putting the world’s brightest minds to work for the American economy, rather than educating them and then sending them to competitor nations.

We applaud Representative Shadegg for re-introducing this important legislation and urge that its critical provisions be included in a bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform measure this year.
